What is dermal filler dissolving?

Dermal filler dissolving is a medical procedure used to reverse unwanted or problematic results from hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dermal fillers. An enzyme called hyaluronidase is injected into the area where the filler has been placed. It breaks down the HA gel so your body can absorb and eliminate it naturally.

Why might someone choose to dissolve filler?

You might consider dissolving filler if you:

  • Are unhappy with the aesthetic result, such as overfilling or uneven contours.
  • Have lumps, bumps or irregular texture after filler placement.
  • Have filler migration (product moving from the intended area).
  • Develop a complication such as the Tyndall effect (bluish tint under thin skin).
  • Have a rare complication that requires medical reversal.

What types of fillers can be dissolved?

Hyaluronidase can only dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Teosyal® and similar products.
It cannot dissolve non-HA fillers (e.g., calcium hydroxylapatite/ Radiesse®, poly-L-lactic acid/Sculptra®, PMMA/Bellafill®).

How is the procedure done?

  • A consultation and assessment is performed first.
  • A patch test may be done to check for allergic sensitivity.
  • The area is cleaned and may be numbed with topical anaesthetic.
  • Small injections of hyaluronidase are placed where the filler is located.
  • The process is usually quick (10–30 minutes).

Results often begin to appear within a few hours to 24–48 hours, and continue improving over a few days to a week.

What will it feel like?

You may feel a pinch or mild discomfort during the injections. Most people tolerate it well, especially with topical anaesthetic.

What happens after treatment?

Common reactions include:

  • Redness, swelling or tenderness at the injection site
  • Bruising
  • Mild itching or warmth

These effects are usually temporary and resolve within a few days.

Possible side effects & risks

Although generally safe when performed by a trained medical practitioner, there are some risks:

  • Allergic reaction to hyaluronidase (rare but can be severe).
  • Over-dissolution, meaning more filler or natural HA is broken down than intended, potentially leading to loss of volume.
  • Uneven results that may need follow-up treatment.
  • Infection or prolonged inflammation (rare).
  • Activation of cold sores if dissolving around the lips in people prone to herpes.

Note: Hyaluronidase breaks down filler and also temporarily affects your own hyaluronic acid in the area. Your natural HA will restore over time.

Aftercare advice

To support healing and reduce risk of side effects:

  • Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for several hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and hot environments for 24–48 hours.
  • Monitor for signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, pain).
  • Contact your clinic if you notice unusual symptoms or persistent swelling.

Future filler treatments

If you plan to have new filler placed in the same area, most practitioners recommend waiting at least 2 weeks after dissolving so the tissue settles and swelling resolves.

Consent & safety
