What is Kenalog?
Kenalog® is a prescription-only corticosteroid medicine (triamcinolone acetonide). In medical aesthetics, it is used in very small, targeted doses to reduce inflammation and excessive scar tissue formation.
It is not a cosmetic filler and is used only where medically appropriate.
What is Kenalog used for in medical aesthetics?
Kenalog may be used to:
- Treat keloid scars
- Treat hypertrophic (raised) scars
- Reduce inflammation in certain skin conditions
- Treat persistent inflammatory nodules following aesthetic treatments (where clinically indicated)
- Treat Hay fever symptoms
Its role is to flatten, soften, and reduce redness in problematic scar tissue.
How does Kenalog work?
Kenalog works by:
- Reducing inflammation
- Suppressing excessive collagen production
- Helping abnormal scar tissue remodel and soften over time
How is Kenalog administered?
- Kenalog is given by direct injection into the affected area / the buttock
- Very small volumes are used
- The procedure is carried out by a qualified medical professional
The treatment itself usually takes only a few minutes.
What will it feel like?
- Mild discomfort or stinging during injection
- Temporary tenderness at the injection site
A topical anaesthetic may be used if appropriate.
What results can I expect?
- Gradual improvement over weeks to months
- Scar tissue may become:
- Flatter
- Softer
- Less red or itchy
- Reduction in Hay fever symptoms
Multiple treatments may be required depending on the severity of the scar. Individual results vary.
Downtime and recovery
- Minimal downtime
- Mild redness or swelling may occur for a short period
- Normal activities can usually be resumed the same day
Possible side effects & risks
As Kenalog is a corticosteroid, potential risks include:
- Skin thinning (atrophy) at the injection site
- Lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation)
- Small dents or depressions in the skin
- Redness or bruising
- Infection (rare)
These risks are minimised by correct dosing and expert technique.
