What is diode laser hair removal?

Diode laser hair removal is a medical-grade, non-invasive treatment that reduces unwanted hair by using targeted laser energy. The laser targets melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, heating and damaging it to slow and reduce future hair growth.

This treatment provides long-term hair reduction, not permanent hair removal.

How does it work?

  • The diode laser emits a concentrated beam of light
  • The pigment in the hair absorbs the energy
  • Heat damages the hair follicle while protecting surrounding skin
  • Over time, treated follicles produce finer, slower-growing hair

Hair must be in the active growth phase (anagen) for treatment to be effective, which is why multiple sessions are required.

What areas can be treated?

Diode laser hair removal can be used on most areas of the face and body, including:

  • Face (excluding eye area)
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Bikini and intimate areas
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Abdomen

Our Specialist Nurse Prescriber will assess suitability based on skin type, hair colour, and the treatment area.

What will it feel like?

Most people describe the sensation as:

  • A warm snapping or tingling feeling
  • Mild to moderate discomfort

Modern diode lasers often include cooling systems to improve comfort.

How many treatments will I need?

  • A course of 6–10 sessions is typically recommended
  • Treatments are spaced 4–8 weeks apart, depending on the area
  • Maintenance sessions may be required

Results vary between individuals.

What results can I expect?

  • Gradual reduction in hair growth
  • Hair grows back finer, lighter, and slower
  • Some hairs may not respond to treatment

Laser hair removal works best on dark hair and is less effective on blonde, red, grey, or white hair.

Downtime and recovery

  • Mild redness or swelling around follicles is common
  • Skin usually settles within a few hours to 48 hours
  • Most people can return to normal activities immediately

Possible side effects & risks

Common temporary effects include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Warmth or sensitivity

Less common risks include:

  • Blistering or burns
  • Pigmentation changes (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation)
  • Crusting or scabbing
  • Rare scarring

These risks are reduced when treatment is performed by trained professionals and aftercare instructions are followed.

This treatment may not be suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant (precautionary)
  • Have very light or grey hair
  • Have active skin infections, wounds, or sunburn
  • Have a history of keloid scarring

  • Have recently tanned or used fake tan

A consultation and patch test are required before treatment.
