What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, encouraging collagen and elastin production to improve skin texture, tone, and overall quality.

Microneedling may also be referred to as collagen induction therapy.

What skin concerns can microneedling treat?

Microneedling may help improve:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Dull or ageing skin
  • Mild skin laxity

It can be performed on the face and body, depending on individual needs.

How does microneedling work?

The micro-injuries created during treatment trigger the skin’s natural repair process. New collagen and elastin are produced, leading to smoother, firmer, and more even-toned skin over time. Active serums may be applied during treatment to enhance results.

What to expect during treatment

  • Treatment usually takes 30–60 minutes
  • A topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand
  • You may feel a scratching or vibrating sensation
  • Mild discomfort is common but generally well tolerated
  • Skin may appear red afterwards, similar to mild sunburn

What happens after treatment?

  • Redness typically settles within 24–48 hours
  • Mild swelling, tightness, or sensitivity may occur
  • Light flaking or dryness is possible
  • Makeup can usually be worn after 24 hours (if advised)

When will I see results?

  • Skin may look brighter within 1 week
  • Collagen production continues over several weeks
  • Best results are seen after a course of treatments, usually 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart

Possible side effects

Common and temporary side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity
  • Pinpoint bleeding
  • Dryness or flaking

Less common side effects may include:

  • Bruising
  • Infection (rare)
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Following aftercare instructions reduces the risk of complications.

Who should NOT have microneedling?

Microneedling may not be suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (depending on depth and products used)
  • Have active acne, skin infections, or open wounds
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have certain autoimmune or skin conditions
  • Are taking isotretinoin (Roaccutane®) or have taken it recently
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes or bleeding disorders

Our Specialist Nurse Prescriber will assess your suitability during consultation.

Aftercare advice

For 24–48 hours after treatment:

  • Avoid makeup (unless advised)
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Avoid heat (saunas, steam rooms, hot baths)
  • Avoid sun exposure and wear SPF 30+ daily
  • Use only gentle, approved skincare products

Avoid active ingredients (retinol, acids, vitamin C) until advised.

Are results permanent?

Results are long-lasting but not permanent. Maintenance treatments and good skincare are recommended to maintain results.
