What is waxing?

Waxing is a professional hair-removal treatment that removes hair from the root using warm or hot wax. The wax is applied to the skin, allowed to adhere to the hair, and then removed quickly, pulling the hair out from the follicle.

In a medical aesthetics clinic, waxing is performed using high-quality products and strict hygiene standards to minimise irritation and reduce the risk of complications.

What areas can be treated?

Waxing can be used on most areas of the face and body, including:

  • Eyebrows
  • Upper lip and chin
  • Face
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Bikini line
  • Back and chest

Our Specialist Nurse Prescriber will advise whether waxing is suitable for the area you wish to treat.

How does waxing work?

Wax adheres to the hair rather than the skin. When removed, it pulls the hair out from the root. Because the hair is removed at the follicle, regrowth is slower and often softer compared to shaving.

What to expect during treatment

  • Treatment time depends on the area being treated
  • You may feel a brief pulling or stinging sensation when the wax is removed
  • Discomfort is usually short-lived
  • The skin may appear slightly red immediately after treatment

How long do results last?

  • Results typically last 3–6 weeks, depending on hair growth cycle
  • With regular waxing, hair may grow back finer and less dense over time

Possible side effects

Common and temporary side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Mild swelling
  • Sensitivity or warmth
  • Small bumps around hair follicles

These usually settle within a few hours to 48 hours.

Less common side effects may include:

  • Bruising
  • Skin irritation or burns
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Infection (rare with proper technique and aftercare)

Who should NOT have waxing?

Waxing may not be suitable if you:

  • Are using retinoids, isotretinoin (Roaccutane®), or strong exfoliating products
  • Have sunburn, broken skin, rashes, or active skin infections
  • Have recently had chemical peels, laser treatment, or microneedling in the area
  • Have very sensitive or fragile skin
  • Have diabetes or circulation issues (medical advice may be required)

Always inform your practitioner about:

  • Medications
  • Recent aesthetic treatments
  • Skin conditions or sensitivities

Before treatment advice

  • Allow hair to grow to at least ¼ inch (about 5–7 mm) for best results
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning, or exfoliation for 24–48 hours beforehand
  • Do not apply heavy creams or oils on the day of treatment

Aftercare advice

For 24–48 hours after waxing:

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning
  • Avoid perfumed products on the treated area
  • Do not exfoliate the area
  • Wear loose clothing where possible

Applying a soothing, fragrance-free product may help calm the skin.

Are results permanent?

No. Waxing provides temporary hair removal. Ongoing treatments are required to maintain results.

Consent and safety

Waxing is a professional aesthetic treatment and should be carried out by a trained practitioner. Individual skin responses vary, and results cannot be guaranteed. A consultation is required to assess suitability and reduce the risk of adverse reactions.
